Frequently Asked Questions
HostOlaf FAQs is a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) and answers on Hosting topic.
Web Hosting is a service that allocates space and resources on a server specifically for the files that make up your website. It allows you to publish your website on the internet so your audience can access it and view it.
That's a loaded description of Web Hosting. Let's look at a wider view of it.
Just as you need a physical location if you want to construct a store, building or house, you need a physical location for your website. All of the files (text, images, databases, videos etc.) that your website is made up of takes up space. While a domain name is essentially the address of your website, all of your website's files need to be stored somewhere. Web Hosting gives you that storage place.
Your files are stored on a server. A server is basically a very powerful computer that stores those files, but also is designed to deliver them to your visitor's web browser. The server where your website's files are stored is given an IP address. This IP address allows your visitors' computers to find your website to view it.
You'll have an easy time getting started with your new Web Hosting account! After you have purchased your HostOlaf Hosting Web Hosting package, you will be sent a Welcome Email with login details to the My HostOlaf Hosting control panel. My HostOlaf Hosting includes everything you need to manage your Web Hosting account. You will find important information in your control panel including:
Email Login Information
FTP Connection Details
SSH Connection Details
cPanel Login Details (cPanel is the control panel you will use to manage your websites, files, email, databases and more.
You will also find Softaculous in your cPanel control panel. Softaculous gives you the ability to install the web's most popular software to your web hosting account with 1-click. Install software like WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Magento and more in a matter of seconds.
Publishing Your Website
To publish your web site's files so your audience can view it, upload the files to your account's public_html directory. You are able to update your web site files whenever you want to. However, your audience will not be able to view any files not included in the public_html directory (or within the subdirectory beneath public_html).
Configuring Your Domain Name
If you have a domain name that was not purchased from HostOlaf Hosting that you would like to use with your HostOlaf Hosting account, you will need to update that domain's nameservers (DNS). You won't have to do this if you bought your domain from HostOlaf Hosting. It has already been done for you.
The nameservers and their IP addresses are listed in the Product Details of My HostOlaf Hosting. The nameservers for your web hosting account are ns1.hostoaf.com, ns2.hostolaf.com
Requesting A Free Website Migration
Do you have an existing website that you would like to migrate to HostOlaf Hosting? HostOlaf Hosting will migrate it from your previous host for free! You can request your free website migration by completing this form.
1. Log in to your HostOlaf control panel.
2. Select Domains from the menu.
3. Scroll down to the domains list, and select the domains you would like to renew.
4. Select the Renewal Options tab to the right.
5. Select Renew Now and click Submit. This will take you to confirm your choices and process your payment.
To activate or use the domain name that you have parked you need to change the status of it into Add on.
To begin, you will need to be logged in to your HostOlaf control panel
Legacy Accounts - Click the Domains option from the navigation menu at the top of your screen.
1. Click Assign from the submenu.
2. Choose the domain that is already associated with your account option, then put the domain name.
3. You need to choose how you would like to assign the domain, then choose Addon Domain. An Addon domain name functions as its own domain and website, separate from your primary domain.
4.This step needs to specify a directory you would like the Addon to point to, then choose to create a new directory. Then click Assign this domain once it's finished.
As a security precaution, all new registrations are set to auto-renew unless otherwise specified by the customer. This prevents domain names from accidentally expiring and you from losing control of your web site. We begin attempting to auto-renew domains 15 days prior to expiration. Auto-renewals are billed to the credit card associated to your account.
If you want your domain name to auto-renew, but the auto-renew is turned off:
1. Log in to your HostOlaf control panel.
2. Select the Domains menu.
3. Scroll down to the domains list, and select the domain(s) you want to modify.
4. Click the Renewal Options tab to the right.
5. Select Auto-Renew, and then click Save Changes.
In planning your online presence, a domain name is one of the most important decisions you will make, particularly if you rely on non-internet promotion to drive traffic to your site. If you expect all of your visitors to come to your site by simply clicking a link from a search engine or from other web sites, your domain name can be almost anything. However, if you expect any portion of your audience to manually type the domain name into their browser's address bar, you need to choose a domain name carefully.
Your domain name becomes the "brand name" of your web site. Millions of dollars and millions of hours have been spent researching effective branding.
To modify an e-mail account in cPanel, follow these steps:
1. In the Email section of the cPanel home screen, click Email Accounts.
2. Click the setting that you want to change for the account:
3. To change the account's password, click Manage. Then type the new password into the New Password field under Security.
4. To change the account's quota, click Manage. Then allocate the storage allowed under Allocated Storage Space under Storage.
5. To access the account's webmail, click Check Email.
Without the Domain Name System (DNS), the Internet would be a much less user-friendly place. Instead of using easily remembered names such as hostolaf.com, we would have to use a sequence of numbers like 102.96.106.166 (also known as an IP address) every time we wanted to visit a web site or access a service on the Internet. DNS translates human-readable domain names into numeric IP addresses that computers can understand.
When you purchase a domain name from a third-party registrar, you own the name, but it initially does not point to anything. (Technically, a domain registrar often “parks” the domain, and visitors to the domain see a generic web page provided by the registrar.) To enable users to access your web site using the domain name, you must define the name servers that the domain should use.
Name servers are computers that use DNS to translate the human-reabable domain names into IP addresses. Name servers often contain ns in their domain names (for example, ns1.hostolaf.com). If you purchase a domain name directly from HostOlaf Hosting, you do not have to worry about configuring name server settings, because we take care of this for you. However, if you have purchased a domain name with another registrar (for example, eNom or Go Daddy), you must update the domain's name server settings to “point” to HostOlaf Hosting's name servers. After you do this, users will be able to visit your web site by typing the domain name in their web browser.
The Knowledge Base (also sometimes referred to as the “KB”) is a collection of articles, guides, and tutorials. You can learn how to configure your account, find solutions to many common web hosting problems, and much more.
In short, if you want to configure your web site, fix a problem, or are just curious and want to learn more about web hosting at HostOlaf Hosting, the Knowledge Base is a good place to start.
HostOlaf Hosting's motto is “Our Service, Your Success”. One of the ways we provide this Service and speed to you is by offering servers with Solid State Drives (SSDs). Whereas traditional hard drives have mechanical parts that must physically move, SSDs do not. This fundamental difference in architecture means that are many SSD benefits compared to traditional hard drives, such as:
1. Solid State Drive Reliability: With no moving parts, SSDs are inherently more reliable and durable than traditional hard drives. For example, SSDs have no read/write heads that can crash against spinning disk platters.
2. Solid State Drive Performance: SSDs have much faster read and write access times than traditional hard drives. For example, an SSD has random access times of 0.1 milliseconds or less, whereas a traditional hard drive has access times of 10 milliseconds or more.
3. Solid State Drive Power consumption: With no physical parts to move, SSDs use less power than traditional hard drives.
There actually isn't a difference between the two. Rather Shared Hosting is a type of Web Hosting service.
Shared Hosting is an affordable solution perfect if you have a small blog, a personal website with minimal traffic or if you are launching a new website. At HostOlaf Hosting, our Shared Hosting is user-friendly making it ideal for both new and experienced users, regardless of resource needs.
If Shared Hosting doesn't sound like it will fit your needs, HostOlaf Hosting offers a wide range of other Web Hosting options including:
Dedicated Server Hosting - This type of service is designed for websites with the most intensive resource needs. With Dedicated Hosting, only your files, websites, databases and email are hosted on the server. You don't share the server with any other users.
VPS Hosting - A virtual private server (VPS) falls between Shared and Dedicated Servers. With a VPS, you are hosted on a server shared with other users. However, through the use of virtualization, your account is partitioned off from those other users.
Reseller Hosting - This service is perfect if you're looking to start your own hosting company or are looking to host customer websites of your own. You can also sign up for Reseller Hosting if you'd like to have a separate cPanel control panel for each of your websites.
As long as you have domains registered with us, you can manage those domains in your Domain Manager, even if you no longer have hosting services here. It's where you can manage your domain settings, such as name servers, locking, contact information, privacy, renewal options, etc.
There are several steps after your domain expires to safeguard you from losing any domains you want to keep.
60 days prior to the domain expiration date, we'll begin sending reminders to you by email to the email address you listed with us. You will be sent at least two reminders prior to the expiration date and one reminder within five days after expiration.
If we are unable to secure payment on or before the domain renewal date, your domain name will expire.
Upon expiration, your domain registration will be deactivated and replaced with a parking page indicating the domain name has expired. Other services you have associated with the domain name may no longer function. If the domain is not renewed, it is considered abandoned. We may exercise the right to auction, sell, delete or dispose of the name at any time.
As early as 31 days after expiration, your domain name will enter a holding period and may be purchased by a third party. If a third party purchases the domain name during this time, the domain name will NOT be available for you to renew.
As early as 44 days after expiration, if your domain has not been purchased by a third party, the domain will enter a 30-day Redemption Grace Period.
If you wish to renew your domain name during the holding period or while it is in redemption, and it has not otherwise been purchased by a third party, you may be able to restore the domain name. We reserve the right to charge you a reactivation fee of $30.00 (in additional to the annual renewal fee) in the event you are able to renew your domain name during either the holding or redemption period.
Once the redemption period ends, most registries hold a domain name for a period of five days before deleting it and releasing it again for general registration. During this five day pending deletion process, a domain name is not recoverable.
The redemption period may last 30 days after the initial renewal grace period. You may still be able to redeem the domain during this time. The fee for reactivating a domain in the Redemption Period is $30.00 + the normal renewal fee. Your domain can be redeemed by choosing to renew it from within the Domains section of the Control Panel. At the end of the Redemption Period, the domain(s) will go into a 5-day delete cycle at the end of which they will become available for anyone to register.
This is most often caused by having multiple accounts with HostOlaf, and each account is set to use a different email address. To consolidate all of your renewal notices to arrive at one email be sure that your contact information is consistent for each account.
Login to your HostOlaf control panel.
Go to the Account menu.
Check the Email Address listed under Contacts to make sure it's the same on all of your accounts.
